Note: Acceptance into the Honors Program is competitive, as there are typically more applications than spaces available. Only a student's record after high school counts in the evaluation of an application. Grades are an important indication of a student's academic ability, and a student's course selection and academic load provide some measures of a student's motivation to seek challenges in the classroom. The written statement gives a student the opportunity not only to demonstrate her/his writing skills but also to explain how participation in the Honors Program would contribute to the student's educational goals. The faculty letter of reference will evaluate both your academic skills and intellectual curiosity. All of these aspects of the application are taken into consideration.
The Honors Office will download a copy of your current transcript as well as your current course schedule. If you are a transfer student, please provide the Honors Office with an official transcript from your previous place of study. You must request a letter of reference (UNC faculty can fill out and submit online) from a UNC faculty member with whom you have studied. If you are a transfer student, you may request a letter of reference from a faculty member at your previous place of study. Such requests must be made in time for the letter (and a transfer student's official transcript) to arrive in the Honors Office, CB# 3510, 225 Graham Memorial, no later than FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2008.
In the space below, please provide a 100-250 statement that tells us why you are attracted to the Honors Program and how you feel you will contribute to it. Your essay should not exceed 250 words. You may cut and paste your essay from a word processing program.
Completed applications, including a faculty letter of reference, must be submitted to the Honors Program no later than FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2008, 4:00 PM. The Program cannot accept applications before Friday, August 22, 2008 . Please do not ask for exceptions. Notification of the selection decisions will be emailed within two weeks after the September 5 deadline. If a student is invited into the Honors Program, she/he must take at least two honors courses during each academic year and maintain a minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA in order to remain in the program.
